ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Views International is an European NGO having its Executive Office situated in the city of Liège, Belgium. The usual activities of VIEWS International are: the organization of European projects (youth exchanges, EVS, seminars…). And then there are the local activities, carried out together with our Belgian partners. Our projects are adapted for young visually impaired persons, 18-30 years old. The volunteer can develop intercultural activities with sighted and visually impaired young Belgians, and help them create European activities where they are involved (in the field of music, sport…) He/She can help organize leisure activities (cultural gatherings, sport activities) for sighted or visually impaired young people, together with our network of local partners (La Baraka asbl, etc.); he/she can help with awareness-raising sessions (such as dinners in the dark, info sessions on visual impairment, etc.) or organising logistics/ set up activities for international youth projects.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

The volunteer will have his own room, but will share kitchen, bathroom and toilet with the group of young volunteers, boys and girls separated. The apartment will be in the neighbourhood, so as to allow a relatively quick autonomy, thanks to the mobility and orientation classes. The neighbourhood counts many small shops, more accessible to young people. Electrical household appliances will be equipped with tactile marks, and tools will be adapted (table sets with contrasting colours, marked storing boxes, freezer…).

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

In his first two weeks, the visually impaired volunteer will be given classes of orientation, as well as daily-living and professional skills sessions, with a timetable agreed by mutual consent with the supervisors and which takes into account everyone’s needs and possibilities. French classes will also be provided during this period in an intensive fashion, with adapted material and provided by a teacher specialized in French as a Foreign Language and with a lot of experience with visually impaired students.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

This project mainly targets young visually impaired people, 18-30 years old. In order to better adapt to the daily tasks, the volunteer must have a basic knowledge of French (beginner level). The volunteer will be motivated and will have the desire to be integrated in the working team. Besides, the volunteer will strive for the autonomy and integration necessary in his private and daily life, both with his housemates and his multicultural neighbours. Being open and knowing how to listen are essential qualities for the tasks that the volunteer will be required to carry out.

VOLUNTEER ACROSS BORDERS, BELGIUM

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Over Grenzen vzw mains Across Borders Association and is an organisation that sets up projects concerning Peace- and Remembrance education for both youths and adults. It wants to connect the past and the present to promote a culture of peace and non-violence. The association uses the Youth Meeting Centre as a guest accommodation and educational centre as a ´base of operations´ for its activities. Because the YMC is situated next to the German military cemetery of Lommel, and in that way connected to the German War Grave Commission, it also supports the (youth) work and educational vision of this organisation. Across Borders Association has no economic, political or religious goals and is politically neutral. the most important activity will be the preparation and execution of new projects, like international red hand day, youth exchanges, German commemoration day Volkstrauertag, art exhibitions, create historical information brochures, etc…

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

In our accommodation they have their own room with their own bathroom. We will create a shared living room. We also created a small kitchenet with refrigerator for their personal use. They will get the opportunity to eat with the groups, or to cook their own meals. Most of the time there are left over from the kitchen, which they can take. But they can also cook themselves. They will get a bicycle, as transportation. But they can also use the local bus transport which stops 200 meters from our house. The train station is 3 km from our house. A trainticket with 10 rides is provided.

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

You will do an extra language course at the people’s university of Lommel. The Juleica certificate is a certificate that you can by doing a 5 day course via the German War grave commission. You can only do this one when your German language is okay. When you only speak English we will give you the opportunity to do a similar training course via the Belgium organisation ‘Tumult’. You will do a one day hygiene course, about hygiene rules in kitchens. And you will get the opportunity to enter more international trainings we offer ourselves.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

It would be good if he/ she has a driver’s license. Age will be between 18 and 30 years old. We would like a good gender balance. So we will try to get a boy and a girl, when possible. They can come from a big city, but then they do need to know that our house is on a bit of a deserted area. We don’t ask them to have studied already. Open towards a new challenge in a different country. They need to realize that they will be away from home for a long time The volunteer is a social person, who likes to with groups of people.

ESC IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

SCI has been organising international volunteering projects for 100 years internationally. SCI’s mission is to promote a culture of peace by organising international volunteering projects with local and global impact; the volunteers work will support this mission. The volunteer will be supporting the implementation of two projects in SCI: “From Dreams to Actions: together for a peaceful future” and “Grassroots change: volunteering, leadership and emancipation through hands-on work and mentoring”. The volunteer will work closely with the two project teams (remotely) and t​he Project lead in the office. ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

We will offer: – 11 months volunteer contract (under European Solidarity Corps) with Service Civil International’s International Secretariat; – Accommodation, comprising of a furnished room and shared facilities (kitchen, bathroom); – A bike sharing card to use for transport between volunteer’s house and work and to explore the city of Antwerp; – A monthly volunteer allowance of 380 EUR; – Travel reimbursement for your travel between Antwerp and your place of residence at the beginning and at the end of your service (specific amount depending on location); – SCI Health Insurance.

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

We are looking for a candidate who has: – An interest in the topics of peace education, human rights, solidarity, volunteering, intercultural dialogue, and who is eager to contribute to SCI’s mission; – An interest in researching/developing educational tools, materials and methodologies supporting volunteering and non-formal education; – An interest in managing projects with European funding; – Looking to build/improve cooperation in a team (also working remotely); – Looking to build/ improve organisational skills; – Good English language skills (spoken and written).

Writing and youthwork in solidarity for Palestine in Brussels, Belgium

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The volunteer will write articles and stories about daily life (cultural, social,…) in Palestine/Israel for social media and the electronic newsletter. Participate and play an active role in a group of young volunteers in Brussels that organise activities(workshops, discussion evenings, movie night, cooking workshop, dabke,…) as different ways to introduce the subject to other groups and organisations.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

Palestina Solidariteit vzw will offer a place to stay in Brussels for the volunteer. A monthly allowance and pocket money will be given to cover the volunteer’s food expenses. As well as covering the travel costs from the volunteer’s home country to Belgium including return (beginning and end of project).

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

A Dutch language course, Erasmus+ training and options to follow trainings to develop your personal skills. 2 weekly follow up with the team coordinator.

Volunteering with children in Belgium

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

IRHOV, the hosting organization is a primary and secondary school for young people (between 3 and 21 years) with hearing or visual impairment.Most of the young visually impaired volunteers who apply for an experience abroad know little or nothing at all about specialized education, as they attended mainstream schools. This project will enable them to meet young people who study in a specialised school. They will thus have the chance to compare the two types of experience and to talk about them with the young pupils they will get in contact with during their service. Volunteers can: – help to better understand difficulties related to visual impairment, even when specific material is available; – strengthening links with families and between families; – ensuring the links between people responsible for extracurricular activities (sport day, theatre, reading) and the young pupils; – giving a positive image of visual impairment to young pupils from the mainstreem school.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

The volunteer will live with ohter young visually impaired volunteers in an apartment; kitchen, bathroom and toilet will be shared, whereas bedrooms are individual. The appartment is a 20-minute walk from the service placement. The centre of town is also at walking distance (25 minutes): an urban neighbourhood close to the centre, but calm and green nonetheless. The volunteer will get a monthly sum of pocket money and food & hosehold money. He will mange his budget according to his needs.

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

During the first two weeks, the volunteers don’t work: they benefit from orientation and mobility classes (to learn to go to places for daily life and work, routes, shops in the neighbourhood), as well as from daily living skills sessions (to prepare meals, do the shopping, do the laundry and take care of the linen and the house, first aid), and intensive French classes, so as to make them as autonomomus. All along the project they will get support regarding their special needs from the coordinating association, Views International.
